This monarch butterfly emerged yesterday, and he's going to be released today. We like to send them off with a good breakfast (the most important meal of the day!) so here he is slurping up some fresh watermelon. It is literally the first time this butterfly has encountered food, and you can see him figuring out how to use his proboscis. After a few false starts he's slurping up fruit juice like a champ. They only ever seem to eat in the mornings -- we've never been able to get them to eat lunch or dinner, only breakfast.
